i don’t know about you, but it’s certainly getting cold where i live in southern california! winter outerwear is a must for most places of the world, and while a coat or jacket can be a pricier wardrobe staple, it should certainly be considered as an investment piece. since it’s only used for a short time each year, a good coat should have a long lifespan, especially if it’s well-designed (read: timeless, not trendy). spending a little more money on a quality piece will ensure that you look good for years to come- no matter how cold it is!
here are my favorite ethical outerwear staples for handsome + thoughtful men!
what can i possibly say to describe how awesome patagonia is? traceable supply chain, recycled materials, organic cotton, environmental + social responsibility, plus $10 million in donations from this year’s black friday sales. they’re awesome, hands down. plus, they offer a huge selection of coats + jackets. not everything is vegan, as some jackets are insulated with recycled and traceable down, but a large amount is animal-free.
outerknown was created by pro surfer kelly slater and designer john moore. as surfers who “grew out of logos,” they offer casual menswear with just the right mix of laid-back and grown-up cool. their coats and jackets are made from econyl (recycled fishing nets), other recycled materials, and organic cotton whenever possible. outerknown’s production factories abide by the strict policies of the fair labor association and bluesign, an organization which sets standards for environmentally friendly production right from the beginning of the supply chain. outerknown has a good-looking selection of insulated winter jackets.
vaute (which is haute + v for vegan) prides itself on being the world’s first vegan fashion brand, and was the first vegan fashion label to show at new york fashion week. all of vaute’s products are produced in nyc’s garment district from high-tech and sustainable materials. inspired by creator leanne mai-ly’s bitter winters living in chicago, vaute offers beautifully designed coats that are incredibly warm. all of vaute’s coast are completely vegan.
prana is a member of the fair trade association and partners with bluesign, ensuring that workers are treated fairly and that their products meet the highest environmental safety standards. they use fully traceable organic cotton, recycled materials, and hemp. they offer a fairly diverse selection of coats, ranging from lightweight to heavyweight. just a note, while many of their coats are vegan, some do contain recycled down.
